SURPRISE, CHRISTMAS IN JULY!!

I was feeling jittery with excitement. I kept watch as we waited for them to knock on the door.
I am terrible at keeping secrets and the anticipation was making me feel faint. Bing Crosby was crooning his christmas songs as the guys tried to keep an eye on who was winning the surfing while the kids played in front of the television and us girls busied ourselves getting the food ready and setting the table. There were a couple of false knocks at the door which were enough to have me break out into a small sweat and go crazy hissing and yelling to everyone to sit at their seats at the table, and as annoying as it was, it was fantastic opportunity to perfect our surprise. The real knock was faint and unassuming and when we opened the door to them, seeing her face brighten and shy away into her hands made my eyes well up with salty drops.

WHERE ARE YOU FROM?

When I was a kid I can remember often being asked, "Where are you from?". I was a bit of a slow learner you see, and it took me until my mid-twenties to realise that when people asked me this, they weren't asking about where I lived, they were asking me about my heritage. I can remember being asked by my best friends mum if I was Sri Lanken and I cringe thinking about my eight year old response at the time, "What does that mean?". I often get claimed by all sorts of people; Indians, Maori's, Sri Lanken's, Greek's, South American's and Indigenous Australian's. Whenever this happens, I often think about how I could have been an awesome spy morphing into different people with different stories to tell, maybe in another lifetime. When this board came up at my local coffee spot my hubby very excitedly put my pin on for me, I wonder how many other people will also be pinning Papua New Guinea?

OUR SLICE OF SUNSHINE

I am obsessed with the pizza slice of sunshine that carves itself into our living room during the afternoons.

CITY STROLLING

Little boys don't walk. They hop, skip, jump, run, bounce and dart from left to right and they don't like to wait around for too long. So I had to shoot from the hip and this is some of what we saw walking from the Powerhouse Museum back to Central Station on our day out.

TIME TRAVEL

The best thing about group fitness is the group coffee afterwards. It takes a lot of willpower to bypass the gooey dark chocolate and blueberry muffins when you are ordering your coffee and today it was made all the more easier as my eyes were being entertained by the amazing décor which dressed the inside of this unassuming coffee warehouse. I could have spent all day inside of this wonderful space sipping coffee, thumbing through time aged books, turning over delicate pieces of crockery, opening retro containers and cosying myself on the reminiscent arm chairs at the back of the warehouse.

WEEKDAY AFTERNOONS

Our home was still and dozing in the afternoon sun until the keys shake open the front doors. His bag is thumped onto the floor, he peels off his school shoes and socks and leaves them trickling at his bedroom door, homework is slammed onto the dining table and his lunchbox slapped onto the kitchen bench. He curls himself up into the elbow of our lounge and brings Rocco up close so that he can watch him play on the ipad. Through the afternoon sunbeams I watch the speckles of dust and fluff float up and then settle around him as he comfy's himself back into the peaceful disposition of home.

COFFEE AND SLEEP

Now she sleeps soundly.

Earlier we held our conversation over her loud cries as I calmly tried everything to settle my girl. I rocked, cradled, cooed and fed my baby girl, over and over again. My friend tried to settle her too. Her square little face strained and turned red as she protested even more. We chatted and talked for as long as it became obvious that Vinnie was not going to settle to sleep. We called it a day and we made our way through her house and back out to my car. Saying our goodbyes through her protesting cries at the driveway. I start the car and her crying stops as we drive away. We arrive home and I gently unbuckle her from the car seat and carefully bundle her up to our blue doors. The blankets in her bassinette were still unravelled from her waking up earlier this morning. I tucked her back into them and watched her relax into her little space.
